Over the years we've had several Schoonerbabies. And now the managing editor, that would be me, is bringing another Schoonerbaby to the office, the two-month-old Wendelynne. I could spend a lot of time describing the various delights of the girl, but I thought you might like a peek at the office as well. So here's a look at the office, and I thought we might add a tiny human figure. To add visual interest and scale, of course, to this photo essay on the last Friday of February.
I'll try to keep the images a bit smaller so they'll load faster.
The girl rests after getting pushed into the office. The history--and a variety of references--loom above.
I thought you might like to get a look at some of the history of the magazine. This shelf of back issues goes back to the mid 1930s and runs through to the current issue. You can read the magazine from the year you were born, graduated from college, or got your third divorce, depending on where you are in life.
She has a lively, vibrating chair that allows her to command my desk as I review submissions, answer emails, and keep the magazine on its production schedule.
Of course, there's a door to my office so that I can keep an eye on our interns and research assistants as they keep yet other wheels of the magazine rolling along.
This volunteer is still to young to read the submissions. She's very good with black and white mobiles, however.
The girl and I have different tastes in liquid refreshment, but we both require that our beverages be warmed.
So one larger picture. This is the view outside the office window. The campus extends off to the east.
A hard day behind a desk will wear out even the young. It's good that we have a ready supply of soft, home-made blankets to crash out on.
I'll put up a review of our AWP experience early next week.
