a rubber date stamp! This office supply dates back in America to the 1840s and 1850s. Its popularity didn't take off, however, until the Civil War when the U.S. government required that all canceled revenue stamps include a notation of the date along with the name of the person canceling them.
One more piece of rubber stamp trivia: in Pink Floyd's song "When the Tigers Broke Free" are the lyrics, "His Majesty signed with his own rubber stamp"!
